Microneedle Therapy’s Benefits for Acne Scarring and More
Microneedle therapy, a minimally invasive procedure, offers promising results for individuals struggling with scarring from acne. An acne outbreak can leave behind stubborn scars, both physical and emotional. Microneedle therapy has demonstrated very positive results for patients, including smoother, rejuvenated skin.
Microneedle therapy, also known as microneedling or collagen induction therapy, involves the use of fine needles to create controlled micro-injuries on the skin’s surface. These micro-injuries stimulate the body’s natural wound healing processes, triggering the production of collagen and elastin, essential components for skin regeneration and repair. The procedure not only targets existing scars but also improves overall skin texture and tone.
Numerous medical studies have highlighted the benefits of microneedle therapy in treating acne scars specifically. A study published in the Journal of Cutaneous and Aesthetic Surgery observed significant improvement in acne scars following multiple microneedling sessions. The researchers noted a noticeable reduction in scar depth and pigmentation, accompanied by an increase in collagen production, leading to smoother and more even skin.
Scientific studies conducted over the past decade have demonstrated that micro-needling is a successful therapy that offers improvement in the appearance of not only acne scars but improves skin discoloration, and wrinkles and enhances transdermal delivery of topical skincare products. Micro-needling also poses little risk of bruising, does not result in an inflammatory response, and produces results comparable to laser treatment with less downtime and discomfort.
One of the key advantages of microneedle therapy is its versatility and compatibility with various skin types and tones. Unlike certain laser treatments, which may carry risks of hyperpigmentation in individuals with darker skin, microneedling poses minimal risk of pigmentary changes, making it a safer option for a wide range of patients.
Treatment Recommendations and Procedures
The first visit, including treatment will take 75 minutes with follow-up visits lasting about an hour. It is recommended for most patients to receive a series of 4-6 treatments spaced about 4-6 weeks apart.
Each treatment begins with a numbing agent, which is allowed to penetrate the area to be treated for 20 minutes. While you relax for this pretreatment, you will receive acupuncture at points along your body to address any underlying issues, specific to your needs. Once the micro-needling begins, the procedure takes 15-30 minutes depending on the size of the area treated. You will leave the treatment relaxed and rejuvenated.
Anticipated Results
The actual number of treatments will depend on the focus of treatment, the condition of the skin, and the aftercare. Micro-needling is a nonsurgical therapy and some of our patients have been able to heal in just 24 hours. Some patients experience redness and swelling in the treatment area – almost like a sunburn and this is completely normal. The results depend on each patient’s individual response to the process but should expect their results to appear gradually. We highly recommend that patients undergo a series of multiple treatments to get the best micro-needling results.
Patients typically notice an immediate “glow” to their skin. Visible changes to the skin develop over the course of several days and weeks. Results continue to improve up to 6 months after the treatment.
Why you should try microneedle therapy
Ultimately, microneedling’s ability to trigger the body’s natural regenerative properties to rebuild collagen and elastin in the skin works well on all patients for a wide range of conditions. There’s no sutures, lasers, or incisions needed. With its advanced mechanism, microneedling is the key to rejuvenating the skin with no downtime and no painful recovery.
